‘I want to start my own coaching business.’
These are the 8 words I uttered in a group coaching demonstration (there were 20 other people observing the coaching I was receiving!). I continue being coached and like any good coaching experience my coach gets me to commit to a stretching action that will start my journey.
That evening I’m on a train back home. My internal voice (or gremlin as I like to call it) starts chatting away to me starting with ‘what on earth did you say that for?’ continuing with a lot of dialogue culminating with ‘what do you know about running a business? – you’re an HR Director!’. This could have stopped me and prevented me exploring one of my passions.
If I’d really listened to the stories my internal voice was telling me I would not be writing this blog now! And the last week would have been very different. My behaviour would have been informed by those stories and I would have been behaving as if the only thing I wanted was an HR Director role somewhere.
My coach made me aware of this inner voice and we worked out an approach, personal to me, that would help manage ‘the voice’ when it happened. That’s the brilliant part – I had the resources to do this all along, the coach I was working with made me aware of them!
As people we have some amazing attributes and strengths. We also can be our own worst enemy! Cliched I know! However if we all want to achieve anywhere close to our full potential, we probably shouldn’t rely just on ourselves to get there. Why not? Well there’s numerous reasons but the one I’d like to focus on is our attraction to story telling (any of you box set fans, movie lovers or book worms?). We especially like to make sense of what’s going on around us by telling ourselves stories – with a mixture of fact and fiction intertwined! These stories can inform how we behave and easily hinder us.
Sound familiar? Have you avoided doing something you really want? Exercise? Losing weight? Giving up chocolate? Changing career? Having a conversation with someone? The list is endless…..
Here’s where coaching can step in – helping you to achieve a personal or professional goal. A coach will support you in gaining awareness, achieving clarity, identifying choices, making decisions that lead to momentum and finally achieving results.
What’s your wildest dream? Is it possible? What would it feel like to take just one action or step towards making that dream a reality while feeling supported and championed by a coach? What’s your internal voice saying that’s inhibiting you?
